What is CPR?

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency life-saving technique used when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This could happen due to a heart attack, drowning, choking, or other emergencies. CPR is designed to keep blood flowing to vital organs like the brain and heart until professional help arrives.

  • CPR involves two main steps

    • Chest Compressions

      • By performing chest compressions, you manually pump the heart to circulate oxygenated blood.

    • Rescue Breaths

      • Rescue breaths provide air to the lungs, helping to restore oxygen levels in the brain and body.

  •  Continuous Chest Compressions or Hands-only CPR

    • In situations when you shouldn't or can't give rescue breaths

    • Hands-only CPR or Continuous Chest Compressions—is highly effective in saving lives.

Knowing how to perform CPR can make a critical difference in an emergency. Quick action and proper technique can increase the chances of survival, especially if started within the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest.

At To the Heart CPR Training, we teach you how to confidently and effectively perform CPR, ensuring that you're prepared in case of an emergency, no matter where you are.

What are the The Seven Steps to CPR?

When someone is experiencing cardiac arrest, acting quickly and following these steps can save a life. Here’s how you can perform CPR and follow the Out-of-Hospital Chain of Survival to give the person the best chance of recovery:

  1. Check for Responsiveness

    1. Early recognition of the emergency is crucial.

    2. Tap the person’s shoulder and shout to see if they respond. If they don’t, it’s time to act.

  2. Call 911 Scream HELP!

    1. Immediately call 911 or ask someone else to do so. Activating emergency medical services quickly is essential for getting professional help on the way.

  3. Check for Breathing

    1. Look for normal breathing. Gasping or no breaths begin CPR.

    2. Early, high-quality CPR can increase the chances of survival.

  4. Start Chest Compressions

    1. Bare the chest

    2. Find the deepest divot in the chest, between the breasts

    3. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest. Place the other hand on top and interlock your fingers.

    4. Push down hard and fast, at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. High-quality chest compressions are key to keeping oxygenated blood circulating.

  5. Give Rescue Breaths (Optional)*

    1. If you have a MASK & you are TRAINED

      1. Give two rescue breaths after every 30 chest compressions.

      2. If you don't have a mask, you're not trained or prefer not to give breaths, continue with hands-only CPR.

  6. Use an AED

    1. If an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available use it!

      1. Turn it on and follow directions and pictures

      2. Rapid defibrillation is a crucial step, it can help restart the heart.

  7. Continue Until Help Arrives

    1. Keep performing CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths) or hands-only CPR until emergency medical responders arrive and take over.

    2. If the person begins to breathe again, continue to monitor them and provide care until advanced medical professionals can provide care.

*Knowing when to give breaths, protected (Mask) and unprotected is essential !!!

  • Giving unprotected breaths to

    • Someone you don't know

    • You don't know their medical history

    • You don't live with them

    • Is Never advisable, you are risking your life.
